And I loved it.
I loved every second I spent at work. I loved putting on the purple t-shirt every morning, tying my hair back, and baking. I loved serving customers, and catering weddings, and I loved working with the girls I’d hired to help around the shop. One of them was already training to be a second baker, but I still tried to do as much on my own as I could.
I closed the clamshell case around a half-dozen lemonade cupcakes, then handed them to the customer at the counter. “Thank you!” I said cheerfully.
The woman turned and headed for the door. A man on the other side held it for her, then came in.
“Abel!” I grinned, rounding the counter.
He met me, leaning down and kissing me. I wrapped both arms around him.
He licked his lips. “Mmm. You taste like frosting. Lemonade?”
“Just made a fresh batch and I’ve already sold half of them.”
“Good.” He kissed my forehead, then let go, allowing me to get back behind the counter.
“What’s up?” I asked, going to the case and grabbing him a cupcake—peach velvet, his favorite.
“Just coming by to say hi and collect my tax.” He nodded to the cupcake in my hand.
I smiled and handed it to him. “Here you go, bossman.”
He laughed and took my hand. “And,” he said, leaning forward. “I just wanted to say I’m proud of you. I think your mom would be, too.”
I looked down at our joined hands, at the ring sparkling on my ring finger—a pearl, surrounded by chips of amethyst. The most beautiful ring I’d ever seen.
I wished my mom could have seen it. I wished she could be there for me in a few months when Abel and I got married.
But he was right. She would have been proud—of the bakery, but more than anything, of me.
